EVENT & SCREENING: You Belong Here

Curated by high school junior Izza Anwar through an arts internship in partnership with 14 Black Poppies and Spotlight on the Arts (a program of California Lawyers for the Arts), You Belong Here was an intergenerational, intercultural examination of belonging and not belonging through storytelling, media, performance, and interactive art.
Partners included the San Francisco Youth Commission and the San Francisco Public Library's Board of Advising Youth.
You Belong Here was also the premier of The Transition, an intergenerationally produced film about not belonging directed by high school sophomore Mosiah Concha. It was produced by high school senior Trayvon Smith, and executive produced by 14 Black Poppies.

INSTALLATION: BAYMN Fest
October 17-18, 2014 // San Francisco Main Public Library // San Francisco, CA
In October, 14 Black Poppies led the development of a transmedia installation on belonging at the San Francisco Public Library as part of the Bay Area Youth Media Network (BAYMN) Fest, where youth built a studio apartment that incorporated media pieces from both the #WhereDoYouBelong project and an intersecting project, Immigrant Nation.

SCREENING: You Belong @ Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema

14 Black Poppies was invited to curate a lineup of films that examined belonging for Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema. The film screening included Ladies and Gentleman Phatima Rude by Paul King Paul King, Greg Sirota, and Joel Landfield; Flying by Kirthi Nath, The Bench by Frameline's Generations Program, and #WhereDoYouBelong Trailer by Edward Samaniego and Jason Wyman.

EVENT: Join Us At the Table
August 2, 2014 // Red Poppy Art House // San Francisco, CA
The OutLook Theater Project ensemble explored the theme of belonging and curated a day and evening of creative investigation and performance, visual installation and media at San Francisco’s Red Poppy Art House as part of the Mission Arts and Performance Project. The evening was staged as a dinner party and included poetry and storytelling by guest artists including Danny Abdon, the Mission Stories project, and Sabri Jaber; participatory performance vignettes created by OutLook ensemble members inspired by their personal symbols of belonging (including a cast iron skillet, green card, and hackey sack); a visual installation developed in collaboration with Zeph Fishlyn made from drawings and text contributed by the community; and media pieces based on video interviews about belonging.

SCREENING: #BAYMNFEST Submission Day Celebration

14 Black Poppies as part of the Bay Area Youth Media Network curated a line-up of youth produced films that examined belonging as a launch to BAYMN FEST, a multi-day celebration of youth media in the Bay Area and beyond.
